Malaysia
At this budget conscious time, Malaysia's low prices make it hard to resist for 2010. It might not be the first destination on your list because of the lengthy flight (around 13 hours from London), but the relative strength of the pound against the Malaysian Ringgit, make it the perfect cheap destination. It's the ideal place for an active holiday with options including a chance to explore the jungles of Borneo, dive the coral reefs, and go caving. Or you can opt to do Malaysia in a more cosmopolitan way by shopping and indulging in spa treatments in the likes of Kuala Lumpur, and then just chill out on the stunning white sandy beaches.

If the global economic recession hasn't put the brakes on your holiday plans, then where should you be heading in 2010? Major sporting events can be a draw, as in the case of Vancouver (Winter Olympics), Delhi (Commonwealth Games) and South Africa (FIFA World Cup), while cultural events such as the European Capital of Culture (Istanbul) or even Oktoberfest (Munich) beer festival can also draw you in. Las Vegas
Everyone should do Vegas at some time or another. Recent economic meltdown has meant that flights to Vegas and hotels are generally much less than they once were. The city is so popular that there's not really an off season, although the best deals can usually be found in July and August and January and February. With the weather remaining largely dry and sunny year round, you really can take your pick of when you want to go, though weekends should be avoided if you want to steer clear of the peak in visitors. Big, bold, and brassy, Vegas has everything to keep the visitor happy, whether it's shopping, dining, partying, or gaming.

Vancouver
Vancouver/Whistler will be host to the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2010. First, the Olympic Winter Games takes place 12th-28st February, and then the paralympians take centre stage, 12th-21st March. Take in an opening or closing ceremony and check out the range of 40-plus winter games events. And don't forget to carve up some snow while you are there too. While visiting, attend some of Vancouver's most popular places including Stanley Park, Canada Place, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Gastown, and the largest mall in British Columbia, Metrotown.

South Africa
For the first time the African continent will host the FIFA football World Cup, and near half a million fans are expected to come flocking. The event will take place 11th June -11th July, which luckily for many of the players, if not visitors, happens to be the southern hemisphere winter. The confirmed host cities include Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth, Mangaung/Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Rustenburg. If you don't fancy the footy, then time your arrival to avoid the event and the higher prices which are expected to arise as a result of the tournament.

Munich
Germany has more than its fair share of cultural festivals, but none demand your attendance more in 2010 than Munich's largest beer festival 'Oktoberfest' which will be celebrating its 200th anniversary. Expect to sit in massive tents (which can seat up to 100,000 in total at a time), and enjoy huge steins of beer, Bavarian music, dance and cuisine for the entire period of the beerfest (18th September - 3rd October). More than 6 million are expected to come flocking in 2010. If you don't make it there for the festival, why not enjoy the Christmas markets on the town square, the Marienplatz, from the end of November, or the tent spectacular Tollwood Winter Festival.

Greek Islands
There may be no Olympics here for 2010, but you can complete a mini-marathon of your own by taking on a trip between a number of the Greek islands. Just take a flight into Athens and head for the port of Piraeus, and there you'll find plenty of ferries to take you to your destination. A good option is to head for the Cyclades group of islands, which include popular destinations like Mykonos, Santorini, Ios and Naxos. Before you return home, make Athens you last port of call and see everything the ancient city has to offer. Seriously, the smog isn't as bad as it's made out to be, especially if you are marvelling at the foot of the Parthenon.

Istanbul
A capital city that straddles both Asia and Europe is surely going to be of interest to visitors, and it's no surprise that Istanbul is finally going to be the European Capital of Culture when it is passed the mantle by Vilnius in Lithuania in 2010. The old city contains more than its fair share of culture, particularly in the old Beyoglu district which offers galleries, theatres, opera, great night life, and fine boutiques. Being outside the eurozone means you will get a great deal more Turkish lira for your pound, making the former Constantinople an affordable holiday destination and even worth considering for a weekend city break.

Delhi
Delhi is the host to the XIX Commonwealth Games in 2010. As a result of being granted the Games the city is seeing a massive transformation with a major facelift. By the time the games takes place (3rd-14th October) many of its historic monuments and heritage buildings will have been restored, and areas such as East Delhi and the Yamuna riverfront will have been developed. Visitors to Delhi can also take advantage of the other opportunities offered such as the ever-popular 'tiger safaris' in the nearby Banhavgarh Wildlife Sanctuary and Kanha National Wildlilfe park.

Newport, Wales
Why Newport? Well, as host for the 2010 Ryder Cup, Wales' newest city - or Celtic Manor Resort to be more precise - is the place to be when the golf swings into action during 1st-3rd October. Newport itself has plenty to offer, with historic attractions including Caerleon, one of the UK's most important Roman sites. The city centre is thriving and has a superb Victorian provisions market, while there's plenty at the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre to keep you occupied. Newport is also a great touring base for those with designs on seeing more than just the golf - The Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons and Forest of Dean all being close.

Nepal
The Nepalese government has placed tourism high on its agenda, so much so that its tourist arm has decided to launch a national tourism campaign "Nepal Tourism Year 2011" with the aim of bringing one million tourists to Nepal by the end of 2011. But why wait 'til then? Surely it makes sense to go before the hoards of trekkers descend and spoil the natural scenery. The high point of any trip, literally, should be Mt Everest, but if that proves physically beyond you, there are other options including rafting trips or jungle safaris. Those seeking less physical pursuits can explore the temples and palaces of Kathmandu and other such calming places.
